How to Choose Healthy Dog Snacks

Does your dog like snacks and treats? If your pet is anything like you, the answer is most likely yes, since most dogs adore being pampered. And as a good dog owner, you want to show your dog that you love and appreciate him by providing him with snacks.

But just like with humans, snacks need to be looked at for what they provide and how they fit into your dog’s daily diet. For humans there has been a steady shift to healthier snacks and treats, due to chronic health problems from poor nutritional choices and other life choices.

This same shift has occurred with the diet of your pet with their snacks and treats chosen from more healthy options. They are vulnerable to human health conditions such as diabetes, cancer, and other chronic health problems that are caused by poor diets.

But what do healthy snacks look like? What ingredients are okay, and which are unhealthy for your buddy?

As with human nutrition, whole, natural foods are the best. Foods that have not been genetically modified are considered safer. There needs to be a balance of protein, fats, and carbohydrates.

When you look around the pet store, however, most of the choices you find will have highly processed foods, ranging from meat, poultry, fish, as well as fruits, vegetables, and grains. These food and snack choices are also loaded with artificial colors, flavors, and chemical preservatives.

Let’s look at what healthy dog snacks consist of:

  • The ingredients are clean, and simple. That means that they won’t be contaminated with chemicals.
  • The ingredients are all 100% natural. That means that they have been grown or raised without modifications.
  • There are no artificial colors or flavors. All colors and flavors will come from real ingredients, like chicken broth for chicken flavor.
  • All the meat and produce come from US farms and are GMO-free. Locally sourced animals and produce assure you that health standards have been maintained.
  • The preservatives are natural. Many healthy dog snacks use Vitamin E and/or Vitamin C. Preservatives are needed to allow the product to be safely on the store shelf longer.

How do you know that these facts are important? The Association of American Feed Control Officials have researched and explained what all the ingredients mean, and which ones have nutritional value for your dog. The purer the ingredients are, the healthier and safer they should be.

The American Kennel Club has also looked at fruits and vegetables to determine which are safest for pets. Most can eat what we eat, but there are a few, like avocados, which are toxic to dogs, leading to vomiting and diarrhea. But blueberries are great for dog snacks. They are full of antioxidants to fight off the free radicals that the body creates through food digestion as well as the turnover of cells in muscles and blood. Basically, antioxidants act like garbage collectors of these free radicals, to keep your dog’s organs healthy.

Why should you avoid corn in your dog’s snack?

Corn is variously labeled as a vegetable, a fruit, and a whole grain. There are two forms of corn that are grown by farmers, field corn and sweet corn. Most often, field corn is used in manufacturing pet foods and snacks. Corn can be extremely healthy, with Vitamin C which protects dogs and us from different health problems, such as heart and colon. But field corn has issues that make it less sale.

Field corn if it comes from intact kernels is safe. Unfortunately, it is often cracked and damaged. These corn kernels can be contaminated by a fungus called mycotoxins/aflatoxin. This fungus can harm or kill dogs and can harm or cause cancer in humans.

The benefits of healthy dog snacks

You may not think of dog snacks in terms of benefits, but when choosing healthy dog snacks, you are providing your dog with valuable nutrients.

Just imagine how energetic your dog will be. He will be running, jumping, and sniffing out the rabbits, or other animals the two of you are hunting. Catch yourself laughing as he plays in the water with pain-free joints. You are amazed at how much better he can track the frisbee that you threw, as if he had new eyes.

  • With fruits and vegetables, you are supporting your dog’s immunity against infection
  • These same fruits and vegetables provide nutrients and antioxidants to keep your dog’s heart, eyes, GI tract and even his skin.
  • Healthy snacks are low in calories, fat, and processed carbohydrates (unlike potato chips). The provide energy for you and your dog to explore trails.
  • Some fruits, like raspberries have antioxidants which help your dog’s aging joints.

Greetings (name),

As you requested, here is your copy of Healthy Snacks Guide (link). I know you will find many new ideas for snacks for your dog, which are nutritious, low calorie, and give your dog a shinier coat, and more energy.

When Sherry and Hank Helleren began Furry Friends Natural Products in 1990, they wanted to make sure that they were giving their dogs the best food that they could. They had been disappointed and even scared at what they were learning about most dog food and dog snack brands.

Looking at the ingredients on many of those products, they found a laundry list of chemicals, several of which could be harmful to their furry family members. Most of the snacks were filled with protein and fat, but little if any nutrition that would help their immunity, teeth, digestion, or joints.

Through research and discussions with vets and animal nutrition experts, they discovered that the healthiest foods for their dogs were like the healthiest foods for themselves.

Sherry and Hank also learned that snacks should make up no more than 10% of a dog’s daily diet. Prior to that knowledge, they had given their dogs many snacks as treats and to keep them occupied, much like they did for themselves. No wonder they and their dogs were having weight issues!

The Helleren’s set their kitchen up to make healthy, bite-size snacks, which were low calorie, full of nutrients, and liked by dogs. They used locally grown meats and produce form farms that focused on organic and healthy processes.

The result is Puptastic Naturals treats. They come in five flavors, all which dogs love. They have no artificial flavors or chemical preservatives.

Exactly the healthy snacks your dog deserves

Vets warn that most dog snacks are too high in calories, fat, and protein

Your dog is a member of your family. You want to let him know that you care for him. When he sees you eating snacks, he wants some too. But your vet has told you that your pet is too heavy. He needs to lose weight.

He tells you that you must find snacks that have less calories, fat, and protein and more fruits and vegetables. Snacks are not meant to be a major part of your dog’s daily diet. In fact, they shouldn’t make up more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories.

How can you treat your dog but also keep him healthy?

Puptastics Natural dog snacks are just what the vet ordered!

Puptastics was created by a couple living in a small Illinois town, who were searching for a better choice of snacks for their family of dogs. They didn’t want them to be all filler, fat, animal byproducts, artificial chemicals, and corn.

They experimented in their own kitchen to find the right combination of ingredients, using organic and healthy animals and produce from their local farms. The result were bite-size nuggets which were packed with energy and healthy nutrients from their fruits and vegetables, and the natural preservative Vitamin E. Their dogs loved them and now dogs around the country love them too.

While the American Kennel Club notes that dogs don’t need fruits and vegetables as a main part of their diet, they are great for snacks in moderation.

Snacks made of fruits and vegetables are much lower in calories than traditional snacks, allowing you to be a bit more generous with the treats.

Fruits and vegetables provide dogs with nutrients and antioxidants that meat can’t. These vitamins and antioxidants improve their eyes, fur, digestion, and immunity.

Even Vitamin E, which is used as the preservative in Puptastics is helpful for dogs struggling with dry skin.
